Um [[tld|TLD]] delegado é aquele que foi formalmente adicionado à zona raiz DNS pela [[iana|IANA]], significando que está ativo e pode ser resolvido na internet pública. Um TLD não delegado é aquele que foi aprovado ou solicitado, mas cujos registros de servidor de nomes ainda não foram inseridos na zona raiz. A distinção importa porque um TLD pode passar pela avaliação da ICANN e ter um Acordo de Registro assinado e ainda assim permanecer não delegado por meses durante a configuração técnica. Todos os TLDs visíveis na Base de Dados da Zona Raiz da IANA são delegados.
