[[tld|TLD]] được ủy quyền là TLD đã được [[iana|IANA]] chính thức thêm vào vùng gốc DNS, nghĩa là nó đang hoạt động và có thể phân giải trên internet công cộng. TLD chưa được ủy quyền là TLD đã được phê duyệt hoặc đã nộp đơn nhưng bản ghi máy chủ tên chưa được chèn vào vùng gốc.
