Eine delegierte [[tld|TLD]] ist eine TLD, die von der [[iana|IANA]] formal in die DNS-Root-Zone aufgenommen wurde, was bedeutet, dass sie aktiv ist und im öffentlichen Internet aufgelöst werden kann. Eine undelegierte TLD ist eine, die genehmigt oder beantragt wurde, deren Nameserver-Einträge aber noch nicht in die Root-Zone eingetragen wurden. Dieser Unterschied ist wichtig, da eine TLD die ICANN-Bewertung bestehen und einen unterzeichneten Registry-Vertrag haben kann, während sie während der technischen Einrichtung monatelang undelegiert bleibt. Alle in der IANA Root Zone Database sichtbaren TLDs sind delegiert.
