Un [[tld|TLD]] delegado es aquel que ha sido añadido formalmente a la zona raíz DNS por [[iana|IANA]], lo que significa que está activo y puede resolverse en internet público. Un TLD no delegado es aquel que ha sido aprobado o solicitado, pero cuyos registros de servidor de nombres aún no han sido insertados en la zona raíz. La distinción es importante porque un TLD puede superar la evaluación de ICANN y tener firmado un Acuerdo de Registro y aun así permanecer no delegado durante meses mientras se realiza la configuración técnica. Todos los TLDs visibles en la Base de Datos de la Zona Raíz de IANA están delegados.
