Толстый (thick) и тонкий (thin) WHOIS описывают две модели хранения контактных данных [[registrant]] в системе [[whois|WHOIS]] TLD. В тонкой модели [[registry-operator|реестр]] хранит только технические данные (серверы имён и [[registrar]] записи), а полные контактные данные хранятся у отдельного [[registrar]]. В толстой модели реестр централизует все контактные данные — регистранта, административного и технического контактов — в единой авторитетной базе данных. ICANN обязал .com и .net перейти с тонкого на толстый WHOIS в 2013 году. Все новые [[gtld|gTLD]] работают с толстым WHOIS по [[raa|RAA]] 2012 года.

Before 2013, a .com WHOIS query returned minimal data from Verisign's registry, then pointed you to the registrar's own WHOIS server for contact details — the thin model. Post-migration, Verisign's thick WHOIS returns all registrant and contact information directly.
