WHOIS grueso (thick) y fino (thin) describen dos modelos para almacenar datos de contacto del [[registrant]] en el sistema [[whois|WHOIS]] de un TLD. En el modelo fino, el [[registry-operator|registro]] almacena solo datos técnicos (servidores de nombres y [[registrar]] de registro), mientras los detalles completos de contacto los mantiene el [[registrar]] individual. En el modelo grueso, el registro centraliza todos los datos de contacto — del registrante, administrativos y técnicos — en una única base de datos autoritativa. ICANN mandató la migración de .com y .net de WHOIS fino a grueso en 2013. Todos los nuevos [[gtld|gTLDs]] operan WHOIS grueso bajo el [[raa|RAA]] de 2012.

Before 2013, a .com WHOIS query returned minimal data from Verisign's registry, then pointed you to the registrar's own WHOIS server for contact details — the thin model. Post-migration, Verisign's thick WHOIS returns all registrant and contact information directly.
