Thick und Thin WHOIS beschreiben zwei Modelle zur Speicherung von [[registrant]]-Kontaktdaten im [[whois|WHOIS]]-System einer TLD. Im Thin-Modell speichert die [[registry-operator|Registry]] nur technische Daten (Nameserver und [[registrar]] of Record), während vollständige Kontaktdaten beim einzelnen [[registrar]] liegen. Im Thick-Modell zentralisiert die Registry alle Kontaktdaten — Registrant, administrative und technische Kontakte — in einer einzigen autoritativen Datenbank. ICANN ordnete 2013 die Migration von .com und .net von Thin auf Thick WHOIS an. Alle neuen [[gtld|gTLDs]] betreiben Thick WHOIS gemäß dem [[raa|RAA]] von 2012.

Before 2013, a .com WHOIS query returned minimal data from Verisign's registry, then pointed you to the registrar's own WHOIS server for contact details — the thin model. Post-migration, Verisign's thick WHOIS returns all registrant and contact information directly.
