Kalın (thick) ve ince (thin) WHOIS, bir TLD'nin [[whois|WHOIS]] sisteminde [[registrant]] iletişim verilerini depolamak için iki modeli tanımlar. İnce modelde, [[registry-operator|kayıt kuruluşu]] yalnızca teknik verileri (ad sunucuları ve kayıt [[registrar]]) depolar; tam iletişim bilgileri bireysel [[registrar]] tarafından tutulur. Kalın modelde ise kayıt kuruluşu tüm iletişim verilerini — registrant, idari ve teknik iletişimler dahil — tek yetkili veritabanında merkezileştirir. ICANN 2013'te .com ve .net'in ince WHOIS'ten kalın WHOIS'e geçişini zorunlu kıldı. 2012 [[raa|RAA]] kapsamındaki tüm yeni [[gtld|gTLD]]'ler kalın WHOIS kullanır.
Örnek
Before 2013, a .com WHOIS query returned minimal data from Verisign's registry, then pointed you to the registrar's own WHOIS server for contact details — the thin model. Post-migration, Verisign's thick WHOIS returns all registrant and contact information directly.
