Um TLD ASCII é um [[tld|domínio de nível superior]] composto inteiramente por caracteres do conjunto ASCII (A–Z, 0–9 e hifens), em contraste com [[idn-tld|TLDs IDN]] que utilizam scripts não-latinos. A grande maioria dos TLDs na zona raiz são baseados em ASCII. TLDs ASCII são nativamente compatíveis com todo software [[dns|DNS]] e não requerem codificação especial, enquanto TLDs IDN devem ser convertidos para sua representação [[punycode|Punycode]] (ex.: xn--...) quando transmitidos pela infraestrutura DNS.
Exemplo
.com, .org, and .shop are ASCII TLDs; by contrast, .中国 (China) is an IDN TLD that is transmitted as .xn--fiqs8s through the DNS.
