Un TLD ASCII est un [[tld|domaine de premier niveau]] composé entièrement de caractères du jeu ASCII (A–Z, 0–9 et tirets), par opposition aux [[idn-tld|TLDs IDN]] qui utilisent des scripts non-latins. La grande majorité des TLDs dans la zone racine sont basés sur ASCII. Les TLDs ASCII sont nativement compatibles avec tous les logiciels [[dns|DNS]] et ne nécessitent aucun encodage spécial, tandis que les TLDs IDN doivent être convertis en leur représentation [[punycode|Punycode]] (par ex., xn--...) lors de la transmission via l'infrastructure DNS.
Exemple
.com, .org, and .shop are ASCII TLDs; by contrast, .中国 (China) is an IDN TLD that is transmitted as .xn--fiqs8s through the DNS.
