Eine ASCII-TLD ist eine [[tld|Top-Level-Domain]], die ausschließlich aus Zeichen des ASCII-Zeichensatzes (A–Z, 0–9 und Bindestriche) besteht, im Gegensatz zu [[idn-tld|IDN-TLDs]], die nicht-lateinische Schriften verwenden. Die überwiegende Mehrheit der TLDs in der Root-Zone sind ASCII-basiert. ASCII-TLDs sind mit jeder [[dns|DNS]]-Software nativ kompatibel und erfordern keine spezielle Kodierung, während IDN-TLDs bei der Übertragung durch die DNS-Infrastruktur in ihre [[punycode|Punycode]]-Darstellung (z.B. xn--...) umgewandelt werden müssen.
Beispiel
.com, .org, and .shop are ASCII TLDs; by contrast, .中国 (China) is an IDN TLD that is transmitted as .xn--fiqs8s through the DNS.
