OpenNIC est un projet de [[alternative-roots|racine DNS alternative]] géré par des bénévoles qui offre un ensemble de TLDs non-ICANN en plus de l'espace de noms ICANN standard. OpenNIC résout tous les [[tld|TLDs]] conventionnels tout en servant également des extensions maintenues par la communauté comme .geek, .free, .indy, .fur, .parody et .pirate. Il n'y a pas d'autorité centrale — les TLDs sont votés et administrés par la communauté OpenNIC. Pour accéder aux domaines OpenNIC, les utilisateurs doivent configurer leur appareil ou routeur pour utiliser l'un des [[nameserver|serveurs de noms]] publics d'OpenNIC.
Exemple
A hobbyist community hosts their forum at hobbyists.geek using OpenNIC. Members configure their routers with an OpenNIC resolver, giving them access to the .geek namespace while still browsing regular websites normally.
