OpenNIC ist ein von Freiwilligen betriebenes [[alternative-roots|alternatives DNS-Wurzel]]-Projekt, das neben dem Standard-ICANN-Namespace einen Satz nicht-ICANN-TLDs anbietet. OpenNIC löst alle herkömmlichen [[tld|TLDs]] auf und bedient zusätzlich von der Community gepflegte Erweiterungen wie .geek, .free, .indy, .fur, .parody und .pirate. Es gibt keine zentrale Behörde — TLDs werden von der OpenNIC-Community abgestimmt und verwaltet. Um auf OpenNIC-Domains zuzugreifen, müssen Nutzer ihr Gerät oder ihren Router so konfigurieren, dass es einen der öffentlichen [[nameserver|Nameserver]] von OpenNIC verwendet.

A hobbyist community hosts their forum at hobbyists.geek using OpenNIC. Members configure their routers with an OpenNIC resolver, giving them access to the .geek namespace while still browsing regular websites normally.
