Trotz des informellen Namens sind finalisierte RFCs maßgebliche technische Standards — nahezu jedes grundlegende Internetprotokoll, einschließlich [[dns|DNS]] (RFC 1034/1035), [[epp|EPP]] (RFC 5730) und [[whois-protocol|WHOIS]] (RFC 3912), wird durch ein RFC definiert.
