Transfer Lock (60-Day Lock)
Transfer lock refers to ICANN's Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy rule that prohibits [[domain-transfer|outbound transfers]] of a domain for 60 days after initial registration or after a completed transfer to a new [[registrar]]. The 60-day lock is mandatory for all ICANN-accredited registrars and is distinct from the voluntary [[domain-lock|client transfer prohibited]] (registrar lock) status. Its purpose is to prevent fraudulent transfers initiated immediately after a domain is registered under a stolen credit card or hijacked account. Registrants who have legitimately registered a domain and need to transfer it immediately must wait out the 60-day window unless the gaining and losing registrars agree to waive it under specific circumstances.
Example
If you register a new .com domain today and immediately try to transfer it to a different registrar, the transfer will be rejected — ICANN policy requires the domain to remain with the registering registrar for 60 days.
