OpenNIC
OpenNIC is a volunteer-operated [[alternative-roots|alternative DNS root]] project that offers a set of non-ICANN TLDs alongside the standard ICANN namespace. OpenNIC resolves all conventional [[tld|TLDs]] while additionally serving community-maintained extensions such as .geek, .free, .indy, .fur, .parody, and .pirate. There is no central authority — TLDs are voted on and administered by the OpenNIC community. To access OpenNIC domains, users must configure their device or router to use one of OpenNIC's public [[nameserver|nameservers]], which also forward queries for standard ICANN domains.
Example
A hobbyist community hosts their forum at hobbyists.geek using OpenNIC. Members configure their routers with an OpenNIC resolver, giving them access to the .geek namespace while still browsing regular websites normally.
