The SOA (Start of Authority) record is a mandatory [[dns|DNS]] record that contains administrative information about a DNS zone, including the primary [[nameserver]], responsible person's email, serial number, and timing parameters for zone transfers and caching.
Example
The SOA record for example.com includes the serial number 2024010101, which increments each time zone data is updated.
