Registrant rights and responsibilities are the bundle of legal and contractual entitlements and obligations that a domain holder assumes upon registration. Rights include the ability to use the domain for lawful purposes, transfer it to a new owner, renew it before expiration, and contest unauthorized transfers. Responsibilities include maintaining [[whois-accuracy]], complying with the [[registrar]]'s acceptable use policy, submitting to [[udrp]] and URS proceedings as a condition of registration, and not using the domain for illegal activity that could lead to [[domain-seizure]]. [[icann]]'s Registrant Rights and Responsibilities framework, published in 2012, codifies these protections to prevent abusive registrar practices such as unauthorized transfers, domain slamming, and lock-in tactics.
Example
When a registrar attempted to transfer a domain without authorization, the registrant invoked ICANN's Transfer Policy to reverse the transfer and filed a formal complaint with ICANN's compliance department.
