Máy chủ DNS có thẩm quyền lưu trữ các bản ghi [[dns|DNS]] gốc và dứt khoát cho một vùng. Khác với các [[dns-resolver|resolvers]] đệ quy truy vấn các máy chủ khác, máy chủ có thẩm quyền cung cấp câu trả lời cuối cùng vì chúng là nguồn sự thật cho các bản ghi của tên miền.
