Generic-restricted TLDs are a subcategory of legacy [[gtld|gTLDs]] that are intended for specific purposes but are not formally [[stld|sponsored TLDs]] with a managing community organization. The three classic generic-restricted TLDs are .biz (intended for business use), .name (intended for individuals), and .pro (intended for licensed professionals). In practice, enforcement of these restrictions has historically been minimal, and they are often treated as quasi-open registrations, though .pro introduced professional verification requirements for certain second-level domains.
Example
.biz was created to relieve pressure on .com for business use, but lax enforcement means anyone can register a .biz domain regardless of whether they operate a business.
