Multipath-DNS, am häufigsten als mDNS (Multicast DNS, RFC 6762) implementiert, ermöglicht es Geräten in einem lokalen Netzwerk, Hostnamen ohne zentralen [[dns|DNS]]-Server zu entdecken und aufzulösen, indem Anfragen per Multicast an alle Geräte im lokalen Subnetz gesendet werden. Das Pseudo-TLD .local ist für mDNS reserviert und darf im öffentlichen DNS nicht delegiert werden. mDNS ist in Apples Bonjour, Linuxs Avahi und Windows 10+ implementiert und bildet das Rückgrat von Zero-Configuration-Netzwerken (Zeroconf) für Dienste wie AirDrop, Chromecast und Smart-Home-Geräte.

When you print to printer.local on a Mac, Bonjour uses mDNS to broadcast a query over the local network. The printer responds with its IP address, and the Mac connects — no DNS server required.
