GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organization)

The GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organization) is the [[icann|ICANN]] body responsible for developing and recommending policies for generic top-level domains ([[gtld|gTLDs]]). It comprises seven stakeholder groups — including registries, [[registrar|registrars]], commercial users, non-commercial users, and internet service providers — each represented on the GNSO Council. Policy decisions require supermajority support across stakeholder groups and are forwarded to the ICANN Board for adoption. The GNSO was the primary deliberative body that produced the [[new-gtld-program|New gTLD Program]] policy framework and the [[raa|2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement]].

Example

The GNSO's Expedited Policy Development Process (EPDP) produced the Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data, which governs how registrars handle WHOIS data under GDPR.
