Data escrow is the practice of depositing copies of domain registration data with a trusted third party. [[icann|ICANN]] requires [[registrar|registrars]] and [[registry-operator|registry operators]] to maintain data escrow as a backup in case of business failure.
Example
If a registrar goes bankrupt, ICANN can use escrowed data to transfer all domain registrations to a new registrar without data loss.
