Infrastructure TLD (.arpa)

The infrastructure [[tld|TLD]] is a special-purpose top-level domain reserved exclusively for technical use by the internet's core infrastructure. .arpa (Address and Routing Parameter Area) is the only infrastructure TLD, managed by [[iana|IANA]] on behalf of the [[icann|ICANN]] community. It hosts reverse [[dns|DNS]] lookup zones (in-addr.arpa for IPv4, ip6.arpa for IPv6) and other protocol-essential namespaces. Unlike all other TLDs, .arpa is never used for public website addresses and cannot be registered by individuals or organizations.

Example

The reverse DNS lookup for the IP address 93.184.216.34 queries the DNS name 34.216.184.93.in-addr.arpa, which lives within the .arpa infrastructure TLD.
