Das neue gTLD-Programm ist die Initiative der [[icann|ICANN]], den Domain-Namespace weit über die legacy gTLDs (wie .com, .net und .org) hinaus auszuweiten. Die erste Bewerbungsrunde wurde 2012 eröffnet, erhielt 1.930 Bewerbungen und führte letztlich zur Delegierung von über 1.200 neuen generischen Erweiterungen — von .app, .blog und .shop bis hin zu Community-Strings wie .nyc und Marken-TLDs wie .google. Das Programm führte Mechanismen wie die [[tmch|TMCH]], die [[urs|URS]], die [[sunrise-period|Sunrise-Periode]] und ein wettbewerbliches Auktionsverfahren für umstrittene Strings ein.
