تؤمّن شهادات SSL بالحرف البديل النطاقَ وجميع [[subdomain|نطاقاته الفرعية]] بشهادة واحدة باستخدام النمط *.example.com. وهي أكثر فعالية من حيث التكلفة مقارنةً بالشهادات الفردية للمواقع ذات النطاقات الفرعية الكثيرة.
