DNS Root Zone

The DNS root zone is the highest level of the [[dns|Domain Name System]] hierarchy, containing records for all [[tld|top-level domains]]. The root zone is managed by [[iana|IANA]] and served by 13 root server clusters operated by 12 independent organizations.

Example

When a DNS resolver needs to find .com's nameservers, it first queries a root server, which points to VeriSign's TLD nameservers.
