Drop Catch
A drop catch (also called domain drop-catching or snap) is the process of registering a previously owned domain name at the exact moment it enters the 'drop' — the brief window after the [[redemption-grace-period]] expires and the registry releases the name back into the pool of available domains. Because high-value expired domains attract multiple bidders simultaneously, specialised services such as SnapNames and DropCatch submit thousands of registration requests per second to maximise capture probability. When multiple services catch the same drop, the domain is typically auctioned among competing backorder holders.
Example
A domain investor places a backorder on a lapsing five-letter .com. When it drops at 2:02 AM UTC, DropCatch successfully catches it and triggers an auction; the investor wins with a $340 bid.
