Ein Drop Catch (auch Domain-Drop-Catching oder Snap genannt) ist der Prozess, einen früher besessenen Domainnamen genau in dem Moment zu registrieren, in dem er in den 'Drop' gerät — das kurze Zeitfenster, nachdem die [[redemption-grace-period|Rückkauffrist]] abläuft und die Registry den Namen wieder in den Pool verfügbarer Domains entlässt. Da hochwertige abgelaufene Domains gleichzeitig mehrere Bieter anziehen, senden spezialisierte Dienste wie SnapNames und DropCatch tausende Registrierungsanfragen pro Sekunde, um die Erfassungswahrscheinlichkeit zu maximieren. Wenn mehrere Dienste denselben Drop erfassen, wird die Domain typischerweise unter konkurrierenden Vorbestellungshaltern versteigert.

A domain investor places a backorder on a lapsing five-letter .com. When it drops at 2:02 AM UTC, DropCatch successfully catches it and triggers an auction; the investor wins with a $340 bid.
