When ICANN approved the first expansion of the generic namespace in 2001, .info was among the extensions selected — the first of that round to win approval. Identity Digital, formerly Donuts and Afilias, operates the registry. Roughly 3.1 million domains are registered, which makes it the most widely used generic extension outside the legacy set. Registration is unrestricted. The original positioning was informational and reference material, though no policy has ever compelled that use.
