대안 DNS 루트는 공식 [[icann|ICANN]] 관리 DNS 루트 존과 독립적으로 운영되는 네임스페이스 시스템으로, 표준 인터넷에서는 볼 수 없는 추가적인 [[tld|TLD]]나 완전히 병렬적인 계층 구조를 도입합니다. 사용자는 이러한 이름을 해석하려면 대안 루트의 권위 서버를 쿼리하도록 [[dns-resolver|DNS 리졸버]]를 명시적으로 구성해야 합니다. 대안 루트 TLD는 ICANN에서 인정하지 않으므로 향후 ICANN 위임과 충돌할 수 있으며, 사용자 지정 구성 없이는 일반 사용자에게 보이지 않습니다. 주요 프로젝트로는 [[opennic|OpenNIC]], [[handshake-protocol|Handshake]], 그리고 역사적인 AlterNIC 및 ORSC 시스템이 있습니다.
