جذور DNS البديلة هي أنظمة مساحات أسماء تعمل باستقلالية عن منطقة الجذر لـDNS الرسمية التي تديرها [[icann|ICANN]]، إذ تُقدّم نطاقات TLD إضافية أو تسلسلات هرمية موازية تمامًا غير مرئية في الإنترنت المعياري. يجب على المستخدمين تهيئة [[dns-resolver|محللات DNS]] صراحةً للاستعلام من خوادم السلطة الخاصة بالجذر البديل لحل هذه الأسماء. تشمل المشاريع البارزة [[opennic|OpenNIC]] و[[handshake-protocol|Handshake]] والأنظمة التاريخية AlterNIC وORSC.
