Community TLD
A community TLD is a [[new-gtld|new gTLD]] or [[stld|sponsored TLD]] designed to serve a specific, well-defined community of interest rather than the general public. Community applicants receive preferential evaluation scoring in [[icann|ICANN's]] new gTLD process in exchange for demonstrating genuine community support, imposing eligibility restrictions on registrants, and implementing policies aligned with community needs. This distinguishes community TLDs from standard commercial gTLDs that are open to any operator.
Example
.coop (cooperative businesses), .museum (accredited museums), .aero (aviation industry), and .catholic (Catholic organizations) are community TLDs with defined membership criteria.
