The New gTLD Revolution

2008–2015

ICANN's New gTLD Program, announced in 2008 and launched in 2012, was the most dramatic expansion of the domain namespace in history. Over 1,900 applications were filed, and more than 1,200 new TLDs were delegated — from .academy to .zone. Brand TLDs like .apple and .google, geographic TLDs like .nyc and .london, and community TLDs like .museum reshaped what a domain name could mean. Extensions like .xyz, .io, and .app became favorites of the tech startup community.

Significance

The new gTLD program shattered the monopoly of the original TLDs and created a genuinely competitive market for domain extensions. It demonstrated that meaningful, descriptive TLDs could attract registrations and that the namespace had near-infinite capacity to grow.
