2008–2015

2008年に発表され2012年に開始されたICANNの新gTLDプログラムは、歴史上最も劇的なドメイン名前空間の拡大でした。1,900件以上の申請が提出され、1,200を超える新TLDが委任されました — .academyから.zoneまで。.appleや.googleのようなブランドTLD、.nycや.londonのような地理的TLD、.museumのようなコミュニティTLDが、ドメイン名の意味そのものを再定義しました。.xyz、.io、.appのような拡張子は、テックスタートアップコミュニティのお気に入りとなりました。

意義

新gTLDプログラムは既存TLDの独占を打ち破り、ドメイン拡張子における真に競争的な市場を生み出しました。意味のある説明的なTLDが登録を集められること、そして名前空間にはほぼ無限の成長余地があることを実証しました。
