Máy chủ thư là phần mềm hoặc cơ sở hạ tầng gửi và nhận email bằng các giao thức tiêu chuẩn: SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) để gửi giữa các máy chủ, IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) để đồng bộ hóa máy khách và POP3 (Post Office Protocol) để tải xuống máy khách.
