Posta sunucusu, standart protokolleri kullanarak e-posta gönderip alan yazılım veya altyapıdır: sunucular arasında giden teslimat için SMTP (Basit Posta Aktarım Protokolü), istemci senkronizasyonu için IMAP (İnternet İleti Erişim Protokolü) ve istemci indirmesi için POP3 (Posta Ofisi Protokolü).
