Post-Bubble Consolidation

2000–2007

After the dot-com crash of 2000–2001, the domain industry restructured around ICANN's emerging governance framework. New sponsored TLDs like .biz and .info launched to relieve pressure on the overcrowded .com namespace. The UDRP provided a legal mechanism for resolving cybersquatting disputes. The European Union launched .eu in 2006, while the first internationalized domain name (IDN) tests prepared the way for non-Latin scripts.

Significance

ICANN consolidated its authority over DNS policy, establishing the accredited registrar model still in use today. New generic TLDs proved there was demand beyond .com, paving the way for the much larger new gTLD program of the following decade.
