PTI (Public Technical Identifiers)

PTI (Public Technical Identifiers) is the affiliate of [[icann|ICANN]] that performs the [[iana|IANA]] functions under a contract with the U.S. Department of Commerce that expired in 2016. Created in 2016 as part of the IANA Stewardship Transition — which transferred oversight of IANA functions from the U.S. government to the global multistakeholder community — PTI operates the [[root-zone|DNS root zone]], maintains protocol parameter registries (e.g., port numbers, media types), and coordinates IP address allocation to Regional Internet Registries. PTI is accountable to ICANN and the broader internet community rather than any single government.

Example

When a new ccTLD like .ss (South Sudan) needs to be delegated, PTI/IANA processes the request, validates technical criteria, and updates the DNS root zone accordingly.
