Domain Drop Catching
Domain drop catching (also called 'domain sniping' or 'snap') is the practice of registering a domain name at the precise moment it becomes available after expiring through the deletion process. When a domain completes its [[redemption-period|redemption period]] and enters the pending-delete phase, it is typically released by the [[registry-operator|registry]] in a randomized window. Professional drop-catching services such as SnapNames, NameJet, and DropCatch submit thousands of registration attempts per second to intercept valuable domains. If multiple services catch the same domain, it typically goes to auction among competing backordering customers.
Example
An investor placed a backorder on VintageWatch.com through DropCatch; when it entered pending-delete, DropCatch successfully caught it, triggering an auction among five other backordering customers that settled at $3,200.
