Comparable Sales (Comps)

Comparable sales — commonly called 'comps' — are historical domain transactions used to establish the fair market value of a domain name under appraisal. Just as real-estate agents reference recent nearby property sales, domain investors consult databases such as NameBio, DNJournal, and Afternic's reported sales history to find names with similar keyword patterns, character length, extension, and commercial relevance. Filtering comps by recency (last 12–24 months) and by the same TLD yields the tightest value range. Strong comps make [[end-user-sale|end-user negotiations]] more data-driven, defensible, and less susceptible to lowball offers.

Example

Before listing 'electricboats.com' for sale, an investor searches NameBio and finds 'electricyachts.com' sold for $8,500 and 'electricvessels.com' for $4,200 — setting a realistic asking price of $6,500.
