Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) are the most widely recognized domain extensions on the internet. Originally limited to just seven extensions — .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov, .mil, and .int — the gTLD landscape expanded dramatically after ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program, which introduced over 1,200 new extensions ranging from .app and .dev to .blog and .shop. Unlike country code TLDs, generic domains are not tied to any geographic location, making them available for registration by anyone worldwide.
