WHOIS protokolü (RFC 3912), TCP bağlantı noktası 43 üzerinden alan adları, IP adresleri ve otonom sistemler hakkında kayıt verisi sağlayan bir sorgu-yanıt protokolüdür. Başlangıçta düz metin ve kimliği doğrulanmamış olan WHOIS, yapılandırılmış erişim kontrollü aramalar için büyük ölçüde [[rdap|RDAP]] tarafından yerini almıştır. GDPR kaynaklı redaksiyon, 2018'den bu yana WHOIS yanıtlarında görülebilen kişisel verileri önemli ölçüde azaltmış ve [[icann|ICANN]]'ın SSAD çerçevesi herkese açık olmayan verilere erişimi yönetmektedir.
