No country code on the African continent is more heavily used than South Africa's, which holds roughly 1.2 million domains. The ZA Domain Name Authority oversees the extension, delegated in 1990. Almost all registration occurs one level down, principally under .co.za for commercial entities, with .org.za serving non-commercial bodies. Most of these second-level namespaces are open, though a few attach local-presence conditions. The structure predates and has outlasted attempts to popularise direct registration.
