Generic Restricted

Generic restricted top-level domains (grTLDs) occupy a middle ground between fully open generic TLDs and strictly limited sponsored TLDs. These extensions are technically available for general registration but come with usage restrictions that registrants must agree to. The three grTLDs are .biz (restricted to bona fide business or commercial use), .name (intended for individuals' personal domains), and .pro (originally restricted to licensed professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and accountants, though requirements have been relaxed over time). While enforcement of these restrictions varies, the intent is to maintain a degree of purpose and relevance within each namespace. Generic restricted TLDs were introduced during the early 2000s expansion of the domain name system as a compromise between fully open and fully restricted models.
