MTA-STS（RFC 8461）は、メールドメインが自社のメールサーバーへの受信SMTP接続にTLSを使用し、有効な[[ssl-tls|証明書]]を提示するよう要求するポリシーを宣言できるメカニズムです。ポリシーはHTTPSで提供されるポリシーファイルを指すDNS TXTレコードで公開され、MTA-STSをサポートする送信メールサーバーはメール配信前にポリシーを取得してキャッシュします。MTA-STSは機会的TLSダウングレード攻撃を防ぎ、[[dnssec|DNSSEC]]を必要としない代替手段として[[dane|DANE]]を補完します。[[dmarc|DMARC]]や[[spf-record|SPF]]とともにMTA-STSを実装することで、メールセキュリティが大幅に強化されます。
