Registry Premium

A registry premium is a domain name permanently designated as higher-value by the [[registry-operator|registry operator]] itself, not by the secondary market. These names carry elevated [[registration-fee|registration]] and [[renewal-fee|renewal]] fees that persist indefinitely — unlike aftermarket markups, the premium is baked into the registry's price list and cannot be negotiated away. Registry premiums are common among new [[gtld|gTLDs]] for short, keyword-rich strings.

Example

The .io registry designates 'ai.io' as a registry premium at $2,500/year — every registrar charges that same base price because it originates at the registry level.
