The United States is the birthplace of the internet and the domain name system. Despite having its own ccTLD (.us), American businesses and individuals overwhelmingly prefer generic TLDs like .com, .net, and .org. The .us domain is primarily used by local governments, schools, and organizations with a distinctly American identity. The US hosts the majority of the world's domain registrars and registries, including Verisign (operator of .com and .net), and ICANN itself is headquartered in Los Angeles.
