Web3 Domain
A Web3 domain is an umbrella term for any domain name system that operates on decentralized infrastructure rather than the traditional [[dns|DNS]] hierarchy governed by [[icann|ICANN]]. Web3 domains are typically owned as NFTs on a blockchain, serving as universal identifiers for wallet addresses, decentralized applications, and IPFS-hosted content. Because ownership is on-chain, Web3 domains cannot be seized or revoked by a central authority. Systems such as [[ens|ENS]], [[unstoppable-domains|Unstoppable Domains]], and [[handshake-protocol|Handshake]] each implement Web3 domains differently, with varying levels of wallet support, browser integration, and interoperability.
Example
A DAO might use dao.eth (ENS) as its Web3 domain, pointing to a wallet for on-chain governance votes and to an IPFS hash for its decentralized website.
